The Details

I started, a good few years ago, a sketchbook specifically for Continuous Line Drawings.

 Over the years of doing these quick drawings the rules and disciplines I apply have developed and become refined the more I challenge myself to create these drawings.

 In each page of the sketchbook the drawings are created with one continuous line.

 Once my pen hits the paper, it maintains contact till I decide the drawing is finished. Sometimes the pen might slip or the subject moves or changes and so that is it, the drawing is complete whether I feel its complete or not.

I have come to draw only in black biro and I only draw what I can see in front of me, not from a picture or my imagination, and I do this for a number of reasons;

  • I find it helps me feel less pressure to create the perfect drawing

  • It's a quick exercise that reminds me to remain focused on the subject matter.

  • I find myself drawing objects, buildings, plants or corners of a room I wouldn't normal pay much notice too.

  • The way I move the pen across the page adds an energy or movement I wouldn't usually capture, which allows me to view each drawing as more of a snapshot of a moment.

  • It's also a good challenge, outside of my comfort zone and different to what I usually would sit and create.

With every Continuous Line Drawing I do, I have a flick back through the book and reflect on my skills and development as I go on. Each continuous line drawing has become more disciplined and skilful as they go on through the book.

Often I find a past drawing inspires a new illustration!
